While watching his son ride his tricycle in 1888, John Boyd Dunlop realized how uncomfortable the tires made the ride. Dunlop knew the solid rubber wheels did not give to the surface, so he devised a plan. By taking two sheets of rubber, John Dunlop wrapped the tires and glued the sheets together. He filled the rubber sheets with air, and ultimately invented the first ever commercially viable pneumatic, or air-filled tire. With this new intention, Dunlop opened his first tire plant in 1889 in Dublin, Ireland and his first tire factory in Birmingham, England two years following, creating Dunlop Rubber Company.
Dunlop continued his work and by 1920, he invented tires that were capable of reaching over 200 mph. To maximize potential on the racetrack, Dunlop technicians became the first to apply MotorSport tire standards to tires of everyday vehicles. By using MotorSport standards, customers received quality, durability, and endurance from tires designed for street driving. Denevo was designed in the 1970's, as the first "fail safe" tire, giving drivers long-distance and high-speed control with punctured or flat tires. Today, DSST (Dunlop Self-Supporting Technology) tires have been created to support vehicle's entire weight when the tire is punctured or completely flat.
Dunlop's mission is to get it right the first time. Excellence is an expected quality of all Dunlop products and technicians. To protect the environment, Dunlop has created the Environment Management System (EMS) to contribute to the company's integrated quality, environment, health, and safety management system. To monitor their environmental performance, Dunlop completes audits and reviews regularly. Since 1985, Dunlop has cut their average energy use by 40%, cutting their Carbon Footprint tremendously.
The Signature, is the premium and most popular touring tired offered from Dunlop. The tire was designed with breakthrough technology called VersaLoad, which gives the tire consistent handling, ride comfort, and tread wear no matter the ride load. Jointless Band Technology is also used to ensure the tire's structural integrity, and enable smooth performance while achieving maximum speed on the highway. Dunlop, used a unique tread pattern called Multi-Pitch Tread Design Technology and Evaqua Grooves that help ensure responsive dry handling, effective water evacuation, even wear, noise reduction, and confident all-season usability. Dunlop guarantees quality, offering warrantees for at Signature rated tires. The T-rated Signature tire comes with a 75,000 mile tread life warrantee, and the H and V-rated Signature tire comes with 60,000 mile tread life limited warranty.
The Dunlop SP Sport MAXX TT is one of the toughest High-Performance tires on the market today. This tough tire comes with DuPont Kevlar reinforced lower sidewalls that enhance road feedback while maintaining great driving precision. The SP Sport MAXX TT was designed with a motorsport-inspired tread pattern. Not only does the tread make the tire very attractive, it also enhances wet and dry grip while maintaining tread life. Touch Technology enhances tire response, for improved drive feedback with precise steering response. Multi-Radial Tread Technology and an Asymmetric tread design, give the SP Sport MAXX TT superior handling and traction on dry and wet driving surfaces. Additional features of this tire are a Unique Bead Fit System for reduced friction between tire and wheel, Jointless Band Technology for smooth highway performance, and a Max Flange Shield to protect rims from curbs and potholes.
The Rover M/T MAXX Traction is a perfect fit for Light Truck and SUV's that can handle on and off-road surfaces. The Rover features an Asymmetric-Integrated tread pattern that allows for excellent performance and traction on multiple on and off-road surfaces. On-Road capabilities are maximized with Center On-Road lugs for a quiet ride and traction, and Multi-Pitch Tread Design Technology, which also provide reduced noise for a quiet ride. Off-Road capabilities are maximized with technology that improves traction and durability of the Rover M/T MAXX. Center Traction Lugs are used to increase start-up and braking traction on sand, dirt, wet, and winter conditions. Outer-Self-Cleaning Channels expel mud and debris to increase traction on sloppy driving surfaces. Interlocking Center lining and Zigzag sipes protect the forward and lateral bite when driving off-road. In addition to all the on-and-off-road technology, the Rover has an attractive appearance due to rugged sidewall styling, and a Rim Flange Protector for rim protection from curbs.
Way back in April 1921, a group of tire dealers met at the old Automobile Club of America on West 54th Street and founded our association pledged, "To do business on the square." J.R. Benedict of the Hewitt Rubber Company, a tire manufacturer, called the initial meeting. Jerome T. Shaw of Tires magazine assisted in arranging the first meeting. In 1934, the association held its largest meetings and took an outstanding part in problems as they related to the independent tire dealer. It was at this time the name was changed to Greater New York Tire & Battery Association. In June 1937, the association entered into a contract with Charles F. Root under which Mr. Root assumed the general management of the organization.
For many years, no apparent need for a local organization seemed to exist and the only function held was the annual dinner dance. In 1969, Bert Schwarz asked Fred Dresdale, a past president of the National Tire Dealers and Retreaders Association and a member of our local organization, to take the presidency. Under Fred's guidance, along with the help of men like Al Hansel, Dan Chiswick, Harry Jaffess, Steve German, Frank L. Cohen and Herb King, the organization was revitalized. The name was changed again to the Greater New York Tire Dealers and Retreaders Association. In 1989, the Officers and Board of Directors enacted a new set of by-laws to encompass the entire state of New York. Hence, the new name of the organization, the New York Tire Dealers Association.
